Is Manus AI worth it? What Manus does well, and the open-source option you can own
Manus is worth it for one person running autonomous tasks in Manus's own cloud. For a team, the real question is what you keep once the subscription stops. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System you can run yourself.

Is Manus AI worth it for your team?
Manus is an autonomous general AI agent that plans, executes and delivers a complete work product on its own computer. Nothing runs on your side, so it suits work you hand off and collect later: a research run, a browsing task, a scripted job.
The cost and the ownership are where teams slow down. A Manus task's credit use depends on how complex the task is, so the same plan covers many short runs or a few long ones, and plan credits reset at the start of each cycle. Manus Flex lets you bring a key from OpenRouter, Fireworks or Modal, but the other services a task uses still consume Manus credits. The harness, the workspace and the accumulated configuration stay on Manus's side, so what a team keeps when the subscription stops is the output, not the system that produced it.
That is the question to answer before you buy: after the subscription, what do you still hold? On Kortix, the agents, the skills, the memory and the connectors are files in one git repo you own. Any model provider with your own keys. Or the ChatGPT plan you already pay for. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free.
If cost is the deciding factor, what Manus costs reads next to the Kortix plan, and Kortix vs Manus lines up the two on what a team can run and own.
Worth-it questions, answered
- Q1
Is Manus AI worth the money?
For one person handing off autonomous tasks in Manus's own cloud, yes. For a team, weigh the credit bill and the fact that the harness and the configuration stay with Manus, with no self-host.
- Q2
Is Manus AI free?
Manus documents a Free plan with limited monthly credits. Plan credits reset each month, and add-on credits you buy never expire.
- Q3
Is there an open-source Manus alternative?
Yes. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System, and OpenManus is a separate community framework you run yourself. Kortix is the one built for a team, with its configuration in a git repo you own.
- Q4
Can you self-host Manus?
No. Manus manages the harness and the agent infrastructure, so there is no install to run yourself. Self-host is free, and the first run asks six things and no model key.
